Noted reads the growing literature on AI in higher education through one question: what does it mean for how universities assure quality, govern themselves and stay accountable?

What you'll find here

Reading notes are close readings of a single book, paper or report: the argument in brief, what holds up, what doesn't, and what it means for quality assurance and institutional governance. Policy briefs look at a new regulation, guideline or sector report and what institutions should do about it. Essays are longer arguments built from several readings.

Every piece carries a full reference list and a "how to cite" block, and the sources I review are collected on the reading list. Longer pieces are deposited with a DOI so they can be cited in academic work and in quality reports.

Who writes it

I'm Nico Schiavone. I work in quality assurance in higher education in Malta and I'm studying for an MPA in Public Policy and Management at the University of York. I studied Politics and Governance at the University of Malta, and my earlier research looked at student engagement in quality assurance at Maltese private higher education institutions.

I write from the European Higher Education Area and from a small state, which shapes the questions I ask: the ESG, national agencies and regulators, and institutions that don't have the resources of large universities.

The small print

Views expressed on Noted are my own and do not represent my employer or any other organisation. I don't write about internal matters of any institution I work with.

I use AI tools as a research assistant and editor, and I explain how on the AI use page. If I get something wrong, I correct it openly and note the change at the foot of the piece.
